Why Leonbergers?

Breeding Philosophy

The Legend of Tir na nOg

We first discovered Leonbergers one day at an off-leash park in Seattle. This magnificent large dog was just placidly standing in the water enjoying the sunshine and amusing himself while other the other dogs ran wild on the beach. We did not set right out on the correct path though. We spent a long time trying to convince ourselves that Newfoundland's were the breed for us, but found each time we visited that we really did not like the drool. I spent sometime on the puppy list of a great Newfy breeder and turned down two puppies. We finally discussed my hesitations and she suggested if I loved Newfies and not drool, then I should find a Leonberger. We remembered that beautiful dog we had seen standing in the lake.

We then began our search for our own Leo. First we went to the Northwest winter regional specialty to see more Leos in person. I fell in love with them all, but most of all Beauregard von Alpensee. I tried my best to get my self on a list for one of his litters, but all were full and I resigned to waiting a while. Then I got a phone call and found out there was a puppy available for me after all in less than two weeks and Beau was the father! We were so very excited.

We brought home Gaia in March of 2000 and a love affair with this breed began. I thought I wouldn't show much. I figured I wouldn't like it. Our first show was when Gaia was 4 months old at the 2000 LCA National Specialty in Seaside, OR. She won best baby puppy female. I was on cloud nine, I had know she was the cutest one there, but the judge had just agreed and I got my first rosette in the sport of dog showing. What I wouldn't give to still have that rosette today, but as Leo puppies will, Gaia decided it was her ribbon, she earned it, and she was going to eat it!

We soon knew we could not have just one Leonberger, that is when I met Julie's Zeus and spent two months convincing her to let me take him home. From there we decided to import a few dogs from Hungary, bringing us Kefira, Kajsa, and Oonagh.
